O'Shea own goal gifts Spurs victory at Sunderland

O'Shea own goal gifts Spurs victory at Sunderland

Tottenham came away with a 2-1 victory against Sunderland at The Stadium Of Light that further eases the pressure on manager Andre Villas-Boas.
Spurs and Sunderland both started poorly, and it was Adam Johnson who scored the first goal of the match on 37 minutes. Ondrej Celustka put in a deep cross from the right wing that Hugo Lloris flapped at. The ball dropped to Johnson, who took one touch to control it, and fired into the goal as the ‘keeper struggled to recover.
Six minutes later, Spurs were level. A free kick was sent deep for Nacer Chadli, who headed back across goal. Paulinho was first to react, beating John O’Shea to the ball to poke past Vito Mannone.
In the second half, Spurs took the lead on 50 minutes. Moussa Dembele drove towards the byline, and his cross took a deflection first off O’Shea, then Mannone, and ended up in the back of the net, with O'Shea ultimately credited with the goal.
Lee Mason failed to award Sunderland a penalty when a corner hit Sandro’s outstretched arm, and then went close when Emanuele Giaccherini shot straight at Lloris from 10 yards out, but they created little else. Spurs had other chances - Jermain Defoe twice hit the woodwork - and deserved their victory.
