Dortmund readying bid for Ranocchia

Dortmund readying bid for Ranocchia

Borussia Dortmund are lining up a January bid for Inter Milan stopper Andrea Ranocchia, reports La Gazzetta dello Sport.
With key defender Neven Subotic unlikely to return into action before next summer, Jurgen Klopp is looking to sign a high-quality replacement before the January window closes.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Millionaires are set to step up their efforts to sign long-term target Andrea Ranocchia.
The same source has suggested that Inter Milan would settle for a transfer fee in the region of €10m-12m.
Despite establishing himself as a first team regular at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, the Italy international was constantly linked with a move away from the club, and he finally looks set to quit the Nerazzurri.
Ranocchia was recently dropped from the starting line-up by coach Walter Mazzarri, which is expected to speed up his exit.
Inter Milan face Genoa away hoping to return to the right track, with the Nerazzurri available at 19/20 to claim maximum points.

St Etienne place €20m price tag on Zouma

St Etienne place €20m price tag on Zouma

French side Saint Etienne have made it clear that star player Kurt Zouma will not be leaving the club this January unless one of the interested sides match their €20 million valuation of the player.
It is believed that Chelsea, Monaco and Inter Milan are weighing up a move on the 19-year-old footballer, who is currently serving a ten-match ban for breaking an opponent’s leg.
Zouma admitted few days ago that he had been contacted by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, and L’Equipe reports that his agent is trying to engineer a move away from the club for his client.
Nevertheless, Saint Etienne have warned interested sides that the youngster is not for sale in the January transfer window, that is unless their €20 million asking price is matched.
“The Monegasque (AS Monaco) leaders are aware of our position,” Bernard Caiazzo, the president of Saint Etienne Supervisory Board, explained to Eurosport.
“This winter, we have no interest to separate him from us and his sale is out of the question bar a special offer. Zouma will not leave for less than €20 million this winter.”
Despite is fragile age, Zouma has already made a total of 51 Ligue 1 appearances for les Verts, scoring 4 goals in the process.

Sagna nears Arsenal exit

Sagna nears Arsenal exit

Daily Mirror is reporting that Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna looks increasingly likely to leave the Gunners at the end of the season.
The Frenchman will be a free agent in the summer unless he signs a new deal at the Emirates, and he is currently in talks over a contract extension.
And even if Arsenal have made a real effort to keep hold of the experienced defender by offering him a new two-year contract, Sagna reportedly wants a three-year deal, which has seen the negotiations hit a standstill.
Arsene Wenger is still hoping he can persuade his compatriot to extend his stay at the Emirates, but everything suggests the 30-year-old will be leaving North London at the end of the current campaign.
Arsenal are enjoying their most successful season in recent years seeing as how they currently lead the chase in English Premier League, and are priced at 7/2 to lift the coveted title.

Schalke's Huntelaar back in training

Schalke's Huntelaar back in training

Dutchman Huntelaar, Schalke's first-choice striker since joining from Real Madrid in 2010, last played on Aug. 17 against VfL Wolfsburg when he suffered torn knee ligaments in the closing minutes of the game.
He has scored 49 goals in 84 Bundesliga matches.
"This was my longest preparation ever," Huntelaar, nicknamed "The Hunter", told reporters after completing his first training session following the team's return from Qatar. "Now the hunting season is open."
Schalke, plagued by injuries, have slipped down to seventh in the Bundesliga and are desperate for Huntelaar's return as they also prepare for the Champions League round of 16 match against Real Madrid in February.

Schalke keeper Hildebrand to leave at season end

Schalke keeper Hildebrand to leave at season end

The 34-year-old Hildebrand, who joined as an emergency replacement to injured Ralf Faehrmann in 2011, has lost his starting spot halfway through the current season after his younger teammate fully recovered from his serious knee injury.
Schalke sports director Horst Heldt praised Hildebrand's contribution in the past seasons but said the club was now focused on the future.
"Our task with any contract decision is to look ahead. In this position (goalkeeper) we want a different setup and this is something we have told Timo," Heldt said.
A Germany reserve keeper at the 2006 World Cup, Hildebrand has also played for VfB Stuttgart, Valencia, Hoffenheim and Sporting Lisbon.
Schalke are through to the Champions League knockout stage where they will face Real Madrid in February.

Sunderland flop Ji signs for Dortmund

Sunderland flop Ji signs for Dortmund

The 22-year-old had a five-month loan spell with Augsburg last season, scoring five goals in 17 games, and in a convoluted deal has joined the club again on a permanent short-term deal until the end of the season.
However, once that short-term deal expires, the forward will move to Juergen Klopp's men on a four-year deal.
"Dong-won Ji is a professional who can play in several positions across the attack," said BVB sporting director Michael Zorc.
"We're pleased to be getting this talented player on a free transfer in time for the new season."
Ji joined Sunderland from K-League side Chunnam Dragons in June 2011 and played 28 times for the Black Cats, scoring twice.

Belgian winger De Bruyne leaves Chelsea for Wolfsburg

Belgian winger De Bruyne leaves Chelsea for Wolfsburg

The 22-year-old De Bruyne, who also had a loan spell at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga last season, will train with his new team on Saturday.
"For me it was clear that Wolfsburg was my first contact point if Chelsea let me move," the Belgian international said of a move reportedly costing around 20 million euros ($27.11 million).
Neither club released any financial details of the transfer, although Chelsea were keen to recover funds after paying a reported 21 million pounds ($34.53 million) for Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic from Benfica on Wednesday.
"I want to play my part so that the club can continue being successful and return to the international scene," De Bruyne added.
Wolfsburg, German champions in 2009, are fifth in the Bundesliga with the season set to resume after the winter break later this month.
"Signing Kevin means we are bringing more quality into the team," Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking said. "He is a player with outstanding qualities and I am happy that he decided in favour of Wolfsburg."
De Bruyne started the opening Premier League game of the season for Chelsea, a 2-0 home win over Hull City, in August but quickly lost his first-team place and subsequently made only sporadic appearances.
The move is also likely to ensure more playing time for a player desperate to make the Belgium squad for the World Cup in Brazil later this year.

Cabaye ensures Newcastle take points at West Ham

Cabaye ensures Newcastle take points at West Ham

Newcastle United outplayed West Ham United at Upton Park, winning 3-1 with a stylish performance which put the Hammers in yet more relegation trouble.
The star of the show was Yohan Cabaye. Sam Allardyce’s side couldn’t get close enough to him to stop his neat, incisive passes from splitting them open with the kind of regularity which makes goals inevitable. If you’re searching for the cliche to describe his performance: he pulled the strings all day.
It was Cabaye who opened the scoring, too. With just 15 minutes gone he controlled a pullback from Yoan Gouffran just inside the area before sliding the ball into the bottom corner with the inside of his foot.
Soon after it was 2-0. An accurate cross from Moussa Sissoko, over two West Ham centre backs, found Loic Remy, who controlled well and poked the ball past Adrian with the kind of nonchalance only acquired by players already in double figures for the season.
That second goal came on 33 minutes, it then took West Ham 15 minutes to think up a reply. It was through the usual Sam Allardyce source: the long ball. Or, more precisely, a sequence of them played into the Newcastle penalty area. Eventually one fell to Carlton Cole, whose attempt to chest the ball down went through Tim Krul and was bundled in by a mixture of Cole and Mike Williamson.
Still in it at the break, West Ham worked hard in the second half and Newcastle backed off, but the equaliser never really looked like coming.
In the last minute of stoppage time, Cabaye made sure it never would, swinging a needlessly-conceded free-kick into the top corner to ensure that Newcastle took the points.
KEY MOMENTS
15’ - CLASSY CABAYE - GOAL! Cabaye puts Newcastle ahead and it's so simple. Gouffran gets the ball back to him on the edge of the area and he just slides it into the bottom corner with the inside of his right foot.
33’ - NEAT REMY FINISH - GOAL! Remy does it. And it's another classy finish. Sissoko's cross finds him at the back post after floating over the West Ham defence - maybe too easily. He calmly took a touch and dispatched the ball past Adrian with a casual flick.
45’ - COLE/WILLIAMSON BRINGS WEST HAM INTO THE GAME - GOAL! Carlton Cole might have got this. West Ham sling a few long balls into the Newcastle box, Newcastle can’t clear, and eventually, as the odds say it must, the ball just hits Cole and ends up rolling over the line. His chest control is clumsy, but the ball goes through the goalkeeper and Williamson then tries to clear, but can't.
55’ - BIG MISS FROM COLE - Cole so close! Taylor's rolled right along the six yard box and Cole arrived in time to meet it, only to...not really meet it. He seemed not to know which foot to slide with and in the end went with not quite either and the ball squirmed wide!
90+4’ - CABAYE KILLS THE GAME - GOAL! Cabaye swings the free kick into the top corner and finishes the game! Great hit.
TALKING POINT - WEST HAM’S CONTINUED STRUGGLES UNDER ALLARDYCE’S LONG BALL REGIME
West Ham lost again today, dropping them back into the bottom three. This is a Sam Allardyce team, so we all just keep expecting them to get out of it, and yet today they lost to a previously out-of-form Newcastle side at Upton Park. The essential problem seems to be that they’re neither creative enough - Newcastle were rarely troubled by their long balls today - or solid enough defensively to be that uncreative. The long ball has forsaken Allardyce: perhaps it’s time for him to try something new, or have West Ham get someone in who will.
MATCHCAST: FULL COMMENTARY AND STATS
KEY STATS
Former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll last scored for West Ham at Upton Park 10 months ago, in March 2013. That record remains in tact after today.
West Ham have won just one of their last nine Barclays Premier League matches (W1 D2 L6).
Newcastle scored more than twice for only the third time this season today.

MAN OF THE MATCH - YOHAN CABAYE
Cabaye was classy today, as most weeks. West Ham couldn’t get close enough to him to stop him threading balls into his teammates and pulling them apart that way. They also couldn’t stop him from scoring twice, in two moments when he had room anywhere near the area: his first goal was a tidy control and finish; his second was a masterful, game-clinching free-kick.

Gerrard penalty gives Liverpool draw against Villa

Gerrard penalty gives Liverpool draw against Villa

A controversial Steven Gerrard penalty rescued a point for Liverpool in a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at Anfield.
In a breathless first half, Villa shocked Anfield by taking the lead through Andreas Weimann. Gabby Agbonlahor sprinted down the left wing, and squared a great pass for the lurking Austrian.
Liverpool fans would have expected an instant response, but Villa then extended their lead. Agbonlahor, again, this time had space on the right, and Simon Mignolet flapped at the cross, allowing Christian Benteke to stoop at the back post to head into an empty net.
Just before the break, Daniel Sturridge pulled a goal back after getting onto a neat flick from Jordan Henderson.
On the 52nd minute, Luis Suarez went to ground easily after being clipped by Brad Guzan, earning a penalty for Steven Gerrard to slot into the corner.
Liverpool continued to press but never really truly threatened to score another.
KEY MOMENTS
24’ - CLARK HITS THE POST - Cieran Clark heads a thundering header at goal from a corner, but it hits the post.
36’ - BENTEKE GOAL - Agbonlahor again in space crosses for Benteke to head into an empty net after a Mignolet error.
45+3’ - STURRIDGE SCORES - Suarez finds Henderson inside the box, who cleverly flicks the ball for Sturridge to dink the ball over Guzan.
53’ - GERRARD PENALTY - After Suarez goes to ground on the edge of the six yard box, Guzan has only himself to blame for rushing out so quickly. Gerrard coolly converts.

77’ - SUAREZ FREE KICK - 30 yards from goal, his effort is just wide of the top corner.
MATCHCAST: FULL COMMENTARY AND STATS
KEY STATS
Christian Benteke has scored four goals in four Premier League appearances against Liverpool.
Liverpool have scored 53 goals in the Premier League this season, already six more than they managed in 2011-12 (47).
Luis Suarez failed to score despite having scored 22 goals in 16 appearances before this match.
Steven Gerrard has scored more goals against Aston Villa (12) than he has managed against any other opponent in the Premier League.

TALKING POINT
Liverpool need reinforcements at left-back. Thiago Llori will probably leave this winter, Cissokho has not convinced and Jose Enrique is injured. Conceding goals down the wings demonstrates an obvious weakness in their squad, and time is running out for anything to happen in the winter transfer window.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Gabby Agbonlahor (Aston Villa): The most dangerous player on the pitch until he had to go off with an injury, he created both Villa goals and gave them an outlet against Liverpool's pressure.
PLAYER RATINGS
LIVERPOOL: Mignolet 6, Johnson 5, Cissokho 5, Skrtel 6, Toure 6, Gerrard 6, Henderson 6, Sterling 7, Coutinho 6, Sturridge 6, Suarez 6. Subs: Lucas 6, Allen 6.
ASTON VILLA: Guzan 6, Bacuna 6, Vlaar 6, Clark 6, Bertrand 6, El Ahmadi 5, Westwood 6, Delph 6, Agbonlahor 7, Weimann 6, Benteke 6. Subs: Sylla 6, Luna 6, Holt 5.

Cazorla double secures Arsenal win over Fulham

Cazorla double secures Arsenal win over Fulham

A double from Santi Cazorla saw Arsenal record a 2-0 win against Fulham at the Emirates Stadium.
As expected, the league leaders began in the ascendancy and could have been a goal up inside the first minute but Mesut Ozil scuffed his effort following an incisive move.
However, Arsenal failed to push on and were then indebted to the reflexes of Wojciech Szczesny, who had to be alert to palm away a Steve Sidwell volley after 25 minutes
Spurred into action, Arsenal upped their intensity but struggled to carve out clear cut-chances - yet should have taken the lead with 38 gone.
Olivier Giroud followed up Bacary Sagna’s saved volley from a free-kick and looked certain to score but Maarten Stekelenburg somehow managed to get to his feet and repel the point-blank effort, as the sides went to the interval level.
Arsenal opened the second half with far more intent as Serge Gnabry and Laurent Koscielny passed up two very presentable opportunities in the same phase of play before Cazorla struck.
The diminutive playmaker first arrived late to slot a square Wilshere pass past Stekelenburg on 57 minutes before collecting a loose defensive header on 62 minutes and driving a left-footed effort into the far corner from the edge.
Arsenal could – and probably should - have added to their tally but the win keeps their title challenge fully on track, with the most notable contribution of the closing moments of the game coming in the form of a shocking Darren Bent miss with the goal gaping.

KEY MOMENTS
2 – Ozil chance - Ozil is fed inside the box but drags his effort wide. Great ball from Wilshere.
25 – Sidwell volley - Berbatov races down the right and sweeps it into the box but Sagna heads clear. Sidwell meets the clearance on the volley and Szczesny has to palm it away.
38 – Double stop - Cazorla takes the free-kick and lashes it into the wall. It breaks to Sagna who draws a parry from Stekelenburg and Giroud looks certain to open the scoring but Stekelenburg manages to get up and make the double stop.
56 - Double miss - Cazorla swings a free-kick to the far post that Sagna fires back across the box. A Fulham players clears but it falls to Koscielny who misses from six yards. The ball then falls to Gnabry who sees his effort blocked.
57’ – GOAL - Cazorla comes off the left and feeds Giroud, who in turns finds Wilshere inside the box and Cazorla continues his run to meet the square ball from Wilshere and open the scoring.
62’ - GOAL - Monreal is in acres down the left here but his cross is poor. The headed clearance from Hangeland falls to Cazorla, who instantly takes a touch and fires past Stekelenburg from outside the box.
89 – Bent miss - Darren Bent misses a sitter. Good grief. He gets to a ball over the top before Szczesny and while the angle is tight, there is no reason why he should miss from there.

KEY STATS:
This is Fulham’s 15th loss in their first 22 PL matches – since the Premier League was reduced to 20 teams in 1995/96, no side has survived relegation when losing 15 or more of their first 22 PL matches of a season.
Santi Cazorla’s last seven goals in all competitions for Arsenal have all come at home.
Fulham have now conceded 48 goals, the most ever by a non-promoted side in the PL after 22 matches. It is the most by a non-promoted side in the top-flight since West Brom’s 53 goals conceded after 22 matches in 1985/86.
Arsenal win for the fifth consecutive match in the Premier League (home and away), for the second time this season (also won five in a row between 24 Aug and 28 Sept). Their total of 51 points is the best Arsenal have had after 22 matches since ‘The Invincibles’ of 2003/04 (52), alongside 2007/08 and 1932/33 (also 51).

TALKING POINT: Can this Arsenal side claim the title? There is no doubt that Arsenal are serious contenders. No doubt. They are winning all sorts of games and after a poor start put Fulham to the sword. This is the stuff of champions.
MAN OF THE MATCH:
Santi Cazorla (Arsenal): A double from the diminutive playmaker to cap another fine, inventive display.
PLAYER RATINGS:
Arsenal: Szczesny 6, Sagna 6, Mertesacker 6, Koscielny 6, Monreal 5, Flamini 6, Wilshere 7, Cazorla 8, Gnabry 6, Ozil 6, Giroud 6. Subs: Podolski 5, Oxlade-Chamberlain 5.
Fulham: Stekelenburg 6, Riether 6, Burn 5, Hangeland 5, Richardson 5, Dejagah 5, Sidwell 5, Parker 5, Kacaniklic 4, Dempsey 4, Berbatov 5. Subs: Kasami 4, Bent 4 .

Irresistible Manchester City put four past Cardiff

Irresistible Manchester City put four past Cardiff

Manchester City sailed past the 100 goals mark for the season with the 4-2 pounding of Cardiff City.
Edin Dzeko claimed the milestone goal with a scuffed finish from David Silva's cross, despite a hint of handball by the Spaniard in the build-up. Goal-line technology was deployed to award the goal after Kevin McNaughton had tried to hook it off the line.
Against the tide, Cardiff equalised courtesy of the impressive Craig Noone, whose neat footwork bamboozled Vincent Kompany and assured finish left Joe Hart stranded.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were level for all of three minutes, with Jesus Navas finishing a City counter-attack. Yaya Toure found Dzeko whose shot deflected into the path of the grateful Spain winger.
Cardiff were spirited in their attempts to level for a second time, but lacked the end quality to truly trouble City. And Toure eventually put the game beyond the Bluebirds with a crisp finish before substitute Sergio Aguero twisted Steven Caulker inside out before making it four.
Fraizer Campbell tapped in a late consolation for Cardiff, who become the latest side to feel the full force of this unstoppable City side at the Etihad.

KEY MOMENTS
1’ CITY PENALTY CLAIM – Should City have a penalty inside a minute? Dzeko is clumsily caught by McNaughton, but the referee waves play on.
14’ - DZEKO GOAL – City have their 100th goal of the season, and it’s a scrappy one. Hint of handball before Silva crosses for Dzeko, who miscues it just over the line. Goal given via technology.
30’ NOONE GOAL – City’s defence just opens up as Noone waltzes into space and finishes well inside Hart’s near post.
33’ NAVAS GOAL – Cardiff are ahead for barely three minutes. Yaya Toure picks out Dzeko, whose shot deflects into Navas’s path, and the Spaniard finishes low under Marshall.
76’ YAYA TOURE GOAL – Toure caps a superb display with a brilliant run from his own half, exchanging passes with Aguero before finishing well.
79’ AGUERO GOAL – Toure returns the favour by picking out Aguero, who ties Caulker in knots before sliding in City’s fourth.
90’+3 – CAMPBELL CONSOLATION – Campbell ensures the score line remains respectable with a tap-in for Cardiff’s second.
[MATCHCAST - Full match commentary and stats]

KEY STATS
Edin Dzeko’s goal was City’s 100th in all competitions this season. They have achieved it in just 34 games – a new record in the Premier League era.
The win is City’s seventh successive Premier League win, something only achieved by Man United last season.
Manchester City have now won their last 11 straight Barclays Premier League games at the Etihad Stadium and won 16 of the last 17. Their only defeat in that run came when they had a caretaker manager in charge on the final day of the season in a dead rubber.
TALKING POINT
Can anyone beat City at the Etihad? Chelsea and Barcelona are waiting on the horizon for City but, on this evidence, even they will struggle to beat City on their own patch. 16 wins from the last 17 – and the records keep on tumbling.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Yaya Toure (Manchester City): Cardiff's Craig Noone ran him close, but Yaya Toure has to get it for another inspirational all round display. Scored one, assisted one and had a big hand in another.
PLAYER RATINGS
Manchester City: Hart 6, Zabaleta 6, Kompany 7, Demichelis 6, Kolarov 7, Navas 7, Yaya Toure 8, Javi Garcia 6, Silva 8, Negredo 6, Dzeko 7. Subs: ,Clichy N/A, Milner 7, Aguero 8
Cardiff City: Marshall 7, McNaughton 6, Caulker 6, Turner 5, Theophile-Catherine 6, Whittingham 6, Medel 5, Gunnarsson 6, Mutch 7, Noone 8, Campbell 7. Subs: Eikrem 6, Bellamy 6, John 6.

Underrated Giroud the man to lead Arsenal to the title

Underrated Giroud the man to lead Arsenal to the title

The assertion that Arsenal require a proven forward to sustain their title surge is completely unfounded.
It is entirely remiss to measure Olivier Giroud’s contribution to Arsenal’s cause purely in goals scored – it is archaic to do so, in fact. Football has evolved from players being rigidly tied to a set of characteristics that define their role in the team.
Giroud embodies this more than any other player in this current Arsenal side.
While far from Arsenal’s standout performer, he is absolutely integral – his importance is not tied to Arsenal’s apparent dearth of quality up front but the selfless role he performs to allow Arsenal’s dizzying array of midfield talent to dictate from deep.
Whenever challenged to invest heavily, Arsene Wenger has always retained an almost incongruous composure; even amid the throes of transfer crises, Wenger continually reiterated his belief in the team - even when his team appeared to be pillaged by its title rivals. The ethos of team is paramount to Wenger. Giroud augments this Arsenal team.
While it goes without saying that goalscoring is a prerequisite to playing up front, it is not fundamental to the incumbent leading Arsenal’s line. Arsenal are the third most potent team plying their trade in the Premier League behind Manchester City and Liverpool – with Giroud the league’s joint-sixth most lethal goalscorer.
City are a complete attacking anomaly, having racked up over 100 goals in all competitors; while, given the preference to a lone attacker pervading the league, Liverpool’s now unique-ish two-pronged attack has borne considerable fruits but left them susceptible to conceding.
Giroud perfectly fits Arsenal’s modus operandi. His haranguing nature at the point of this Arsenal team sets the tone for this side’s insatiable desire to recover the ball once lost; while the finesse that marks his link-up play sees him highly adept at bringing teammates into the game – maybe even the best in the league.
Granted his finishing can be wayward at times but his statistics compare favourably against forwards often more feted than the French international.
Romelu Lukaku has been exceptional for Everton this season but is level with Giroud in the scoring charts; Giroud, though, has assisted five to the Belgian’s four. However, general consensus seems to dictate that the Belgian is a more complete player than Giroud. Alongside Lukaku and Giroud on nine Premier League goals is none other than the in vogue Alvaro Negredo.
Furthermore, Mario Mandzukic is some way short of belonging to the higher echelons of the striking fraternity but Bayern Munich managed to claim an unprecedented treble last season with the Croat at the point of their attack.
Mandzukic is evidence that it is the system, and not the specifics of the players that operate within it that dictates how successful a team is. Of course the system must contain superlative players and be tailored to suit the personnel, and Giroud’s attributes perfectly suit this superlative midfield-heavy Arsenal side.
Therefore, the clamour for an outstanding striker in this Arsenal side is misplaced.
There was surprise when Wenger shelled out £42 million on Mesut Ozil this summer but Wenger has been consistent that he will sign a player, regardless of price, as long as the price represents value.
For his attributes, there is, this column posits, no striker currently available that would give more value to this Arsenal team than Olivier Giroud.

Granada confirm Tiago Ilori capture

Granada confirm Tiago Ilori capture

Spanish side Granada have moved to confirm reports they are set to complete the signing of Portuguese defender Tiago Ilori from Liverpool.
The youngster has agreed to join los Rojiblancos on loan until the end of the season in an attempt to gain much needed first team experience.
Granada sporting director Juan Carlos Cordero has revealed that the player is set to undergo a medical before completing the deal.
“There is an agreement between the three parties,” Cordero confessed to O Jogo, adding that Ilori was set to arrive in Granada on Saturday to sign the necessary documentation.
Tiago Ilori came through the youth ranks at Sporting Lisbon and went on to make 11 league appearances for the Lions before signing for Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
He has, however, failed to make a single appearance for the Reds this season and was in turn allowed to leave on loan.
Liverpool play host to Aston Villa later today in an attempt to cement the fourth position in the standings, with the Reds 2/9 to emerge victorious.

Real Madrid in summer bid for Thomas Muller

Real Madrid in summer bid for Thomas Muller

Catalan daily newspaper Mundo Deportivo understands that Real Madrid are weighing up a summer bid for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.
Los Blancos aim to further reinforce the attacking department in the summer and they have reportedly set their sights on the Germany international.
Mundo Deportivo has even suggested that Real Madrid are set to table a €45 million bid for the player’s services.
Thomas Muller has spent his entire professional career up to date at Bayern Munich, making a total of 150 Bundesliga appearances and scoring 52 goals.
He has been one of club’s most productive players this season, having managed 7 goals and 6 assists in 16 league outings.
Muller has also started all ten games for Germany in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, scoring 4 goals in the process.
It remains to be seen if Bayern would be ready to consider an offer from Santiago Bernabeu, but it would certainly take a mega money bid to prize him away from Alianz Arena.

Valdes put Barca ´in trouble´, says Martino

Valdes put Barca ´in trouble´, says Martino

Barcelona head coach Gerardo Martino feels Victor Valdes’ decision to leave at the end of the season placed the club “in trouble”.
The Spain international goalkeeper announced last year that he would not extend his contract beyond the current campaign, instead opting to depart Camp Nou, where he has spent his entire professional career.
And Martino believes that call might have had a negative impact on the team.
“I’m very much surprised by Valdes,” Martino told reporters ahead of Sunday’s La Liga clash with Levante.
“His decision not to further his contract put the club in trouble because the goalkeeper has a very large impact on the team.
“It’s the only position where you know a player won’t be there and that means we have to review our choices.”
Barcelona are currently level on points with Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga, three points clear of Real Madrid in third. And Martino thinks it may take more than 100 points to win the title this season.
“We may be looking at a league championship in which 100 points aren’t enough,” he continued. “It’s all about not losing the momentum that the other two leading teams have.”
Reigning champions Barca meet Levante on Sunday, a team they beat 7-0 in the reverse fixture, but Martino is not expecting a similar encounter this time around, adding: “I believe that game wasn’t typical, especially looking at what Levante have done since then.
“They’ve proved themselves to be a solid and combative team, fast on the break and good in defence.
“They haven’t conceded as many goals against any opponent since then. I don’t expect a repeat of that match.”

Bartra signs new Barca contract

Bartra signs new Barca contract

Barcelona have agreed a contract extension with young defender Marc Bartra.
The new deal ties Bartra to Barca until June 2017 and the 23-year-old will put pen to paper on the contract in the coming weeks, the Primera Division champions have announced.
A Barca statement read: "Barcelona announce they have reached an agreement with Marc Bartra to renew his contract, which finished next June 30, and which will be extended until June 30, 2017.
"The buy-out clause in the new contract will be 25 million euros (£20.7million)."

Barca advances despite Neymar scare

Barca advances despite Neymar scare

Lionel Messi scored a pair against Getafe to power Barcelona into the Copa del Rey quarterfinals with a 2-0 win which was mired by an injury to Neymar on Thursday.

Days after seeing Cristiano Ronaldo end his four-year domination of the Ballon d'Or, Messi demonstrated his intention to pry it right back from his Real Madrid counterpart with goals in each half to guide the Spanish champions into the last eight by an aggregate score of 6-0.
But the victory was tarnished by Neymar's exit in the 22nd minute after the Brazil striker turned his right ankle while attempting to extend his dribble to the goal-line, falling under his own weight and going over his limb.
Neymar, who was replaced by Alexis Sanchez, was in obvious pain after going down without any contact, appearing to catch his boot in the grass and go over it.
After losing 4-0 at Barcelona, the hosts nearly gained some early momentum at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez only for Barcelona goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto to deny Pablo Sarabia moments before Neymar's injury.
But Getafe never stood a chance of getting back into the series after that as Messi ensured there would be no repeat of the 2006-07 season when Barcelona lost 4-0 here in the return leg to miss out on the final.
Cesc Fabregas played to Cristian Tello's run into the left side of the area and Messi was well-placed to redirect the Barcelona winger's cross beyond goalkeeper Jordi Codina for the 44th-minute opener.
The Argentina forward showed he hadn't lost any of his pace after missing two months as he blew past four defenders in the 63rd and into the area around Codina before slotting home from a tight angle for 2-0.
Codina did well to deny Messi a hat trick, making a lightning quick reaction save with his leg to deny Messi from inside the area just before the end.

Barcelona unveil mausoleum plans

Barcelona fans could be offered the chance to be buried under the club's ground.
The Spanish giants plan to offer room for up to 30,000 urns under the stadium, whether they upgrade the Nou Camp or move away to a larger venue.
Josep Ramon Vidal-Abarca, the club's director of facilities, admitted the idea of a mausoleum is a response to the wishes of the club's fans.
He told The Guardian: "This is in response to the historical demand from members who want their remains laid to rest at the stadium."
Reportedly there will initially be space for 500 urns, for either 50 or 99 years, with prices starting at around £2,500.

Atletico confident they can keep Costa

Atletico confident they can keep Costa

Speaking to Italian radio station Tele Radio Stereo, Berta admitted Atletico would eventually have to sell the forward but denied Costa’s departure was imminent.
“Atletico is a club which, due to its nature, has to sell every year,” Marca reports Berta as saying.
“We believe that we can keep our players for at least another year.
“Diego Simeone is passing his characteristics onto the players.
“The squad identifies with him and his charisma. He has the ability to get every player to take on a big role in the team.”
Berta also predicted that Atletico’s recent success would sustain for the long-term because of the talent at every level within the set-up at Vicente Calderon.
“The president and the owner of the club are competent people.
“Then there is a group which is doing a superb job: five cups and seven finals. The project goes beyond individual abilities. They graft hard in every game as if it were their last.”

Neymar out for up to four weeks with ankle injury

Neymar out for up to four weeks with ankle injury

A scan on Friday confirmed Neymar had damaged tendons in his right ankle in Thursday's 2-0 King's Cup last 16, second-leg win at Getafe, which sent Barca through to the quarter-finals 6-0 on aggregate, and club medical staff estimated he would be sidelined for three to four weeks.
"What a scare!" Neymar wrote on his Instagram account.
"When I fell I thought of a lot of bad things.
"I thought it could have been a serious injury, I thought about my plans for 2014.
"But Jesus, once again, was with me and it was just a scare. I wanted to thank all those that prayed for me. And don't worry. I will do everything right and will be back in no time."
The injury was the latest setback for the 21-year-old, who had not started a match since Christmas due to a lack of fitness and a stomach bug.
He will miss Sunday's La Liga game at Levante as well as this month's two-legged Cup quarter-final, also against the Valencia-based side.
Before they play City in Europe's elite club competition, Barca have La Liga matches against Malaga, Valencia, Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano and the club said he would definitely miss the Malaga and Valencia games.

Bale has room for improvement, says Ancelotti

Bale has room for improvement, says Ancelotti

Bale joined the world's richest club by income from Tottenham Hotspur in the close season for a fee of 100 million euros ($135.6 million) but his first few months in the Spanish capital have been disrupted by injury.
Ancelotti told a news conference previewing Real's La Liga game at bottom side Real Betis on Saturday (1500 GMT) that the Wales winger was over his most recent knock and would feature in the match in Seville.
"I spoke with him today," the Italian added.
"He is fine, comfortable and he feels good physically. Can he improve? Yes, because he could link up better with his team mates.
"They are the normal problems of a player who arrives in a new culture, a new football and a new country.
"Bale is a very important player for us. The signing of Gareth for Real Madrid was a very good thing."
Bale has started just nine of Real's 19 La Liga games this season, featuring three times as a substitute, but has managed seven goals and provided seven assists.
The 24-year-old has played five times in the Champions League, scoring twice, and twice in the King's Cup, where he is yet to open his account.
A win for Real at Betis would draw them level on 50 points with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid ahead of the joint leaders' games on Sunday at Levante and at home to Sevilla respectively

Barcelona players hail Xavi after 700th appearance

Barcelona players hail Xavi after 700th appearance

Spain playmaker Xavi, who will be 34 later this month, joined Barca's academy in 1991 at the age of 11 and made his debut for the first team under Dutch coach Louis van Gaal in August 1998.
He has since won 22 trophies in 16 seasons including three Champions Leagues and seven La Liga titles.
A consummate ball player, joint captain Xavi is the fulcrum of the team and fellow skipper Carles Puyol said there was no reason why the veteran midfielder could not reach 1,000 appearances for the club.
"He is a unique player who makes things very easy," said Argentina forward Messi on the club website (www.fcbarcelona.es). "He makes the whole team play.
"It's crazy the number of matches he has played and hopefully there will be many more."
Xavi's fellow midfielder and Spain colleague Andres Iniesta, another academy graduate who has been at the heart of Barca's success in recent years, called his team mate "a leader, a reference point".
"On a footballing level he is extraordinary because he is always ahead of the play," said Iniesta.
Sergio Busquets said Xavi, who has also scored 82 goals for the club, was the player he and the other academy players had looked up to when they were learning their trade.
"He is the brain of the team, he always provides balance and he never loses a ball," Busquets said.
Xavi has not always enjoyed success at Barca and Puyol recalled they had suffered "five very difficult years" of trophy drought at the start of the century.
"We talked from time to time and we told ourselves that it could not be that a team like FC Barcelona could go through so many years without winning anything," Puyol added.
"Luckily things changed and we were able to win a lot of titles. He (Xavi) is one of the best in the world, a key player both at Barca and in the national team."
Spain have also benefited from Xavi's talents and he was instrumental in their maiden World Cup title triumph in 2010 and back-to-back European crowns in 2008 and 2012.
He has played under nine coaches, including Van Gaal, Radomir Antic, Frank Rijkaard, Pep Guardiola, Tito Vilanova and now Gerardo Martino

5 talking points at the halfway point of the La Liga season

5 talking points at the halfway point of the La Liga season

LAST YEAR, THE Argentinian superstar’s injury had an obviously negative effect on his teammates at Barcelona. They were in serious danger of exiting the Champions League at the hands of Paris St Germain, before a barely recovered Messi’s belated introduction into the game saved them, while he was a pale shadow of his fully fit self in the portion of the tie he did play amid their two-leg trashing against Bayern Munich.
However, this season, Messi’s injury seemingly occurred at the ideal time. Barcelona had already beaten Real Madrid and established a lead at the top when the setback occurred, while it also coincided with a run of games that were all very winnable.
Consequently, in contrast with last year, Barca did not suffer unduly without their maestro.
And perhaps more importantly, Messi got some much-needed rest and recuperation back in his native Argentina, ahead of what is arguably set be the most intense and pressure-filled few months of the 26-year-old’s career so far, with the whole of Argentina expecting him to emulate Diego Maradona in 1986 and inspire the country to World Cup glory in what would surely be the star’s greatest achievement to date.
2. Can Atletico Madrid last the distance?
There is no doubt that Atletico Madrid have already overachieved hugely this season as, in many ways, they are the Liverpool of La Liga.
Just as Brendan Rodgers’ side have managed to keep pace with their more free-spending rivals, Atletico Madrid are currently level on points with Barcelona, and three ahead of Real Madrid, despite having just a fraction of their budgets.
And in Diego Costa, they have their Luis Suarez — with Costa having scored 19 goals thus far (only one less than top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo).
Costa has, however, hit a rare dry patch of late, recently failing to score in three consecutive matches, though the same cannot be said for Atletico, who earned their third draw of the season against Barca last weekend (with the previous two coming in the Spanish Super Cup) in a highly impressive fashion, limiting their opponents to almost no chances and forcing them to alter their tactics substantially. In addition, they also went unbeaten in the Champions League, thereby illustrating their appetite to challenge for honours on multiple fronts.
Coach Diego Simeone regularly tells the media that they cannot be expected to challenge in the long run with Real and Barca, however the more victories they acquire, the less convincing he sounds. And if they do maintain their phenomenal form, it could conceivably be one of the most exciting climaxes ever to a La Liga campaign, with Simeone’s men set to take on Barca on the final day of the season.
3. How bad is the quality of the rest of the Spanish league?
image

There is no doubt about it — La Liga is very much a three-horse race. While Barca, Atletico and Real are within three points of one another, the next team — Athletic Bilbao — are 11 points off third spot.
The three top teams’ respective records accentuate this significant disparity between themselves and the rest of the sides – Barca and Atletico have both won 16, drawn two and lost one, while Real have won 15, drawn two and lost two.
Nonetheless, to suggest that the Spanish league is not competitive wrongly infers that it is somehow unique in the worst possible way, when if anything, it is more competitive than many other big European leagues. Juventus and Bayern Munich both appear to be running away with their domestic competitions, while the Premier League is the exception that proves the rule — and even in this instance, United comfortably triumphed last year ultimately, while most would agree that Manchester City should win comfortably this time around provided they maintain a positive attitude and avoid complacency.
Still, Real Sociedad’s dire performance in the Champions League and Swansea’s thrashing away to Valencia in the Europa League have led many to speak somewhat dismissively about La Liga, but don’t forget that last season — in a typically knee-jerk fashion — people were similarly writing off the Premier League for their sides’ inept performance among Europe’s elite, only for the English teams to come back arguably stronger than ever this year.
4. Has Gareth Bale been a success?
At this stage, it’s too early to give anything approaching a definitive verdict on the world’s most expensive player. How one begins to go about justifying such an exorbitant £86million price tag is impossible to measure, and it would be unfair to label Bale a disappointment thus far.
As expected, he has been somewhat eclipsed by Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 20 goals compared with Bale’s eight (Karim Benzema, meanwhile, has scored nine).
But Bale’s game time in Spain thus far has been shortened significantly by injury problems, which he continues to suffer from to a degree currently.
Moreover, the Welshman has struggled to get in the team since the turn of the year, despite previously showing glimpses of the brilliance he routinely displayed with Tottenham.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti insists he is pleased with Bale’s form though, but acknowledges that there remains room for improvement, recently commenting: “Of course he can do better because he needs to combine better with his team-mates.
“But those are normal problems for a player who’s discovering a new culture, new football and new country.”
5. Is Gerardo Martino suited to Barcelona?
Barcelona have performed efficiently this season and have done relatively well under the circumstances — despite being without their best player, Lionel Messi, for a considerable portion of the season, they are currently top of La Liga and also emerged with relative ease from their Champions League group.
Following successful stints with both the Paraguayan national side and Newell’s Old Boys, Martino replaced Tito Vilanova at the Catalan club’s helm in the summer, after the latter’s struggle with health problems that had continually dogged his year as Barca boss finally caused him to admit defeat and step down.
And many critics have since been slow to warm to the newly installed Argentinian coach’s style. Although his intense, high pressing and attacking strategy is conducive to Barca’s philosophy to an extent, there is a lingering suspicion that his approach is too direct, and that elegant ball players such as Xavi and Anders Iniesta are not being utilised to full effect.
Consequently, though the results have been positive, that fact alone is not enough for a club with the astronomical standards of Barcelona. It is the outcome of the next few months, however, that will determine whether his obstinate and not entirely popular way of playing is justified.
And there is much at stake for the 51-year-old in this short upcoming period of time — failure to win at least one of the big two (La Liga and the Champions League) will quite possibly cost him his illustrious position as coach of Spain’s most successful club.

Valencia and Malaga in goalless draw

Visiting goalkeeper Diego Alves was forced into early saves from Roque Santa Cruz, Samu, and Duda as Malaga started the game on the front foot.
Valencia did fashion a couple of openings of their own but Daniel Parejo’s free-kick and Jonas’ effort from the resulting rebound were kept out by Malaga stopper Willy Caballero.
The match's sluggish nature continued after the restart with Malaga going the closest to grabbing the three points only for Alves to deny Pablo Perez late on.

Iniesta out of Barcelona's match at Levante

Iniesta out of Barcelona's match at Levante

The Spanish international sustained the injury in last weekend's 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid who are level with Barca on 50 points at the top of the table and host Sevilla on Sunday.
Barca coach Gerardo Martino, who is also without Neymar for the game in Valencia after the Brazil forward damaged ankle tendons in Thursday's King's Cup game at Getafe, said Iniesta was being rested as a precaution.
"He trained almost normally," Martino told a news conference on Saturday. "If the Levante game was a decisive one Andres would play."
The Argentine added that Iniesta would probably be back for Wednesday's King's Cup quarter-final first leg at Levante.
Real Madrid, third in La Liga, can draw level with Barca and Atletico with a win at bottom side Real Betis later on Saturday (1500).

Ronaldo and Bale on target as Real Madrid thrash woeful Betis

Ronaldo and Bale on target as Real Madrid thrash woeful Betis

Real Madrid moved level on points with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid after a convincing 5-0 win at struggling Real Betis.
Goals from newly-crowned Ballon d’Or Cristiano Ronaldo and fellow forwards Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema put the visitors 3-0 up at half-time.
Madrid continued to dominate, with Angel Di Maria adding a spectacular fourth just after the hour mark, while substitute Alvaro Morata rolled home a late fifth.
The result means Madrid - who have won eight matches in a row and are unbeaten since the Clasico on October 26 - move on to 50 points alongside leaders Barca and in-form Atletico, although they both play on Sunday.
Betis are bottom of La Liga, and it showed as Madrid played well within themselves in an easy victory.
Ronaldo opened the scoring with a trademark long-range drive after cutting past two defenders. Former Charlton goalkeeper Stephan Anderson did not move, but he had no chance due to the pace of the strike.
Sergio Ramos was fortunate to stay on the pitch after a two-footed lunge on Leo Baptistao, and Madrid soon doubled their lead as Bale lashed a swerving free-kick past Andersen, who again stood static but could have saved this one.
Betis tried to fight back, with a super low cross from Baptistao bouncing away from Ruben Castro for their best chance, but they never really convinced going forward as Diego Lopez - who has now kept Iker Casillas out of La Liga for a year - barely made a save.
And Madrid landed a hammer blow seconds before the break as Benzema smashed the ball home after fine work from Luka Modric.
The pattern continued, as Ronaldo missed a one-on-one with Andersen, who also saved well from Benzema.
Di Maria eventually added a fourth with a long-range thunderbolt low into the right corner after Betis half-cleared a corner. It was a clean, rapid strike with the keeper unsighted by a crowded penalty area.
Betis offered little going forward in the latter stages, with Real spurning a hatful of chances to extend their lead as both sides used their bench to rest weary legs.
Morata did find the net in the last minute though, the highly-rated young forward stroking the ball past Andersen after Ronaldo mis-hit a bicycle kick into his path. Morata is being linked with a loan move to a Premier League club this window, although his third Liga goal of the season may convince Carlo Ancelotti to keep him in reserve.
Madrid in particular have to deal with a packed schedule – next up is a Copa Del Rey clash against Espanyol in three days, followed by three Liga matches in one week.
Rayo had defender Jose Raul Baena sent off in the 18th minute and lost 2-0 at promoted Elche, while mid-table Granada and Osasuna drew 0-0 at Granada's Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium.
In the late game, former Spain forward Sergio Garcia scored a late winner to give Espanyol a 1-0 win at home to Celta Vigo that lifted Barcelona's second club to eighth.
In the day’s other games, Rayo Vallecano had defender Jose Raul Baena sent off in the 18th minute and lost 2-0 at promoted Elche, while mid-table Granada and Osasuna drew 0-0 at Granada's Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium.

United target Koke signs new Atletico deal

United target Koke signs new Atletico deal

Marca reports that Koke’s contract was originally extended in September but the Vicente Calderon hierarchy were keen to improve the player’s terms once more.
Koke has been a target for Manchester United and it is felt that the Premier League club’s interest was the primary driver behind the decision to re-negotiate.
The release clause in Koke’s deal has been upped from €24m to €60m.
Atletico have signed the likes of Arda Turan, Diego Costa, Juanfran, Diego Godin and Tiago Mendes to new deals this season and continued the trend not only with Koke but also Olivier Torres and Javi Manquillo.
Both of the youngsters have also agreed new contracts, with Marca adding that Atelti are happy to maintain three of their home-grown players.
